Kenya, an emerging economy in East Africa, is home to 10.1 million children and youth
In Kenya, Sunflower Global is dedicated to building a more equitable and just world through providing holistic education to children living in informal settlements. Sunflower Kenya has two programs, Sunflower Early Education and Development (SEED), and Pathways to Alternative Learning and Education (PALE) that provide high-quality education to vulnerable children in the Kibera Slums, just outside of Nairobi, Kenya.
Sunflower Early Education and Development (SEED)
The Sunflower Early Education and Development (SEED) is a literacy and play based pre-school program designed to unlock the potential of vulnerable youth. Through a child-centered, holistic approach to education, with developmentally appropriate curriculum and child-centered methodology, SEED is boosting the brains of pre-primary students, preparing them for successful academic career and life. Our teachers are trained extensively in child centered methodology, with a specific emphasis on play and literacy. Our curriculum emphasizes literacy, social-emotional learning, and play, that also aligns with the Kenya Institute of Early Childhood Development Service Standard Guidelines and the Kenya Institute of Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) syllabus.
The Pathways to Alternative Learning and Education (PALE)
The Pathways to Alternative Learning and Education (PALE) is an alternative primary school program for vulnerable girls at risk of ending their education early due to a myriad of different challenges. Our PALE program begins in fifth grade. The Sunflower Kenya team works to identify girls at risk of ending their education early, and transition them to the PALE program. PALE changes the trajectory of a girl’s life/ PALE students receive a holistic, high-quality education from our highly trained educators. Our partnerships with Rosslyn Academy and Nova Pioneer Academy provide Sunflower students with a world-class curriculum emphasizing critical thinking and reasoning, as well as opportunities for collaboration and enrichment activities at our partner schools. A robust after-school program with supplemental art, literacy, technology and reproductive health programs provides daily enrichment to our PALE students. Bright, driven and enthusiastic, our PALE students are the future leaders of their community and the world.
